Common Air Conditioner Problems in Automobiles

Don’t wait until summer to find out that your car’s air conditioner is not working. Turn it on now to test it and let us here at Techway Automotive know if you have any problems. Better yet, bring your vehicle to our shop and we’ll check the air conditioner for you. It’s especially important to do this if you haven’t had your car’s air conditioner serviced in a few years. Let’s talk about the common air conditioner problems that we fix all the time.

Clogged Condenser

The air conditioner’s condenser is located in the front of your engine, which makes it very susceptible to being clogged or damaged by road debris. Anything that is small enough to get through your vehicle’s grille can either clog or dent the condenser. If this part is damaged, you will end up with hot air blowing into your car rather than the cold air you would expect from the air conditioner.

Dead Compressor

The compressor is the part that can die if it isn’t used frequently. This part needs to be run for about 15 minutes every month, even if you don’t want your vehicle’s air conditioner on. Infrequent use will cause the compressor to malfunction and you won’t get cold air coming out of your vents. Run the AC monthly to ensure that your compressor doesn’t malfunction.

Electrical Failure

An electrical failure can cause all kinds of issues with your vehicle’s air conditioner. The air conditioning system has its own electrical system that is comprised of everything an electrical system comes with. You’ve got wires and relays and other electrical system parts that can malfunction. You also have an air conditioning fuse in your vehicle’s fuse box.

Fan Failure

The fan can refuse to work because of an electrical system problem, which is the likely reason, or because it has died. Without a fan, you won’t have any air blowing through the vents. You will know that your fan is dead if you turn on the air conditioner and nothing happens.

Refrigerant Leaks

Finally, refrigerant can leak out of the hose connections and it can also get too low when it evaporates. Without enough refrigerant, your air conditioner will not blow cold air through the vents, so now is the perfect time for a refrigerant check.
